Need help with surround sound installation?
I just bought a 32″ Vizio tv. I have a Dish Network Satellite box and a Yamaha RX-V361 receiver. I need to hook all of this stuff together so that my surround sound will work.
My satellite box does not have a place for the Y/Pr/Pb connections, just the standard AV connections. It does have a connection for the optical cable.
My TV and receiver have all of the connections. Please help! I am so lost…..
Also, can I hook the receiver directly to the T.V. and bypass the satellite box altogether?
When you say receiver, do you mean the signal from the dish? If so, your television’s tuner will only pick this up as an antenna, and the LNB (the thing connected to the arm of the dish) is not meant to be used as an antenna, therefore you won’t get a signal, the satellite set-top box is required no matter what
First, based on what you said about the box not having Y/Pr/Pb connections and only having standard AV connections, you will need to get a new satellite set-top box that supports HD (assuming you want HD, otherwise, just plug the yellow wire from the satellite box to the TV), if you satellite box, you should have 2 options, either the Y/Pr/Pb you mentioned, or HDMI, I prefer HDMI because it’s simple to install, carries audio and video (for the times you don’t want to have surround), and it’s digital, which means the image quality will be at it’s best, or you can choose component (the Y/Pr/Pb connections), either will work for the connection to the television
For the surround sound, use the optical cable you mentioned and connect that between the satellite box and the surround receiver
After that, everything should work
For an ordered list
1. Get a new Satellite box with Y/Pr/Pb and/or HDMI ports (the box may have both)
2. Connect the dish to the Satellite box
3. Connect the Satellite box to the television with either Y/Pr/Pb or HDMI (I prefer HDMI)
4. Connect the Satellite box to the surround receiver with an optical cable
5. Test and configure
