Satellite receiver needed or not? DIY help?
I saw recently in B&Q that they are selling an ‘ installl yourself’ Satellite dish with decoder. When I moved into my new house there was a SKY tv dish on the wall. Could I buy a decoder to use with the existing dish to watch free tv? My wife speaks Spanish and would like to watch Tv from Spain. What decoder would I need and where can I buy one? Thanks
A Sky receiver will receive TVEi from a Sky dish, (channel 792) in the Style and Culture mix. You can also set Spanish as the preferred language so if there is a Spanish option, like on Euronews channel 509 you will automatically get the spanish rather than English.
Without a subscription, easiest is a 2nd hand Sky box from local paper or eBay. Lidl are selling a digital satellite receiver on special offer £24.99 starting Monday which will do Euronews in Spanish and loads of others like BBC ITV (in English!) for free.
If you point a dish at the Hotbird satellite, 13degrees east (Sky is on Astra 2 at 28 east so if you can see a bit more south than your dish it will work) you can get 6 RNE channels as well as Canal 24 Horas. You can get all those with the Lidl receiver or a Sky box using the other channels menu. You will need a dish no bigger than 60 cm but you will probably get away with the standard sky dish you already have. Installations pointing at Hotbird are very common in the UK.
The best option is a dish pointing to Hispasat at 30 degrees west. Loads of Spanish TV and radio, there, free to air and again, a small dish will do fine. I would certainly use the Lidl receiver for that http://www.lidl.co.uk/uk/home.nsf/pages/c.o.20071217.p.Digital_Satellite_Receiver.ar2
It looks like the Silvercrest SL65. I bought one from them and it’s great for pulling in free to air European channels.
i’ve just seen Sonia Ferrer presenting Gente on TVEi, she’s a doll!
