those expensive fta receivers that come with a mini dish what do they do? why does it have a mini dish with it? with that mini dish will it be nessary to install recent softwares on ur reciver or what?
the fta recievers need the dish, its the ‘antenna’ for the channels.. the box just decodes the signal stream so your tv can use the signal. They are expensive because no one is subsidizing them unlike directv or dish network pay tv services. there is no software to update on the boxes. just point the dishes at a satelite with an unencryted stream, and you will see those channels.

dish satellites Need advice from those who have a satellite dish?
I lived in Italy and France and sometimes I miss the TV shows I used to watch. In France I had a satellite dish with a decoder so that I was able to get International channels. I really don’t know how it works in the USA; I assume it must be the same since we are talking about satellites, but I’m not sure. Thanks.

It all depends what you’re using it for.
If you are planning on setting up a TRUE FTA system , meaning that your not using it for Dish network or BEV, then Coolsat would be my choice since it does an excellent job of Blind scanning frequencies and can power a motor correctly on dishes that move from satellite to satellite.
