Are old huge satelliete dishes still operational ?

The old huge Satellite dishes, from the 80s/90s, I still see them on roofs often sometimes.

Are they just junk that people do not bother to remove or can they still work?

Was there a time when you could just buy the dish and watch everything for free?

Wasnt their descramblers for awhile?

Do people still do that?

I am not going to use it, I have no TV, I am just curious.

Thank you.

thank you for answer, is the signal scrambled ? can people still buy those huge dishes ?

Matthew, or anyone do they still work to this day, where can you buy them or read up on them for example?

Not only do they work, but they also capture signals not meant for broadcasting. My buddy had one and he would pick up the live TV transmission signals (including the network staff communicating between each other) so while most were watching commercials, you would hear Bob the director telling newscaster Alice if she wanted to go out for a drink after the game. You would see the live signals and hear fans swearing up a storm.

If you have the right descramber box, you can also catch HD signals, and signals from other countries. It was bizarre how many stations those large antennas could capture.
