Need advice from those who have a satellite dish?

I lived in Italy and France and sometimes I miss the TV shows I used to watch. In France I had a satellite dish with a decoder so that I was able to get International channels. I really don’t know how it works in the USA; I assume it must be the same since we are talking about satellites, but I’m not sure. Thanks.
I don’t want to pay a subscription, I didn’t have one in France : I just had the satellite dish, the decoder. Period.
